Star Alliance members ANA Lufthansa Joint Venture
ANA, Japan’s largest airline, and Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Europe’s leading airline, are announcing that they are launching a strategic joint venture with each other on Japan-Europe routes after ANA receiving Anti-Trust Immunity (ATI) approval from the Japanese Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport. This latest agreement between the two Star Alliance members follows the launch of a similar joint venture between ANA and United Airlines on trans-Pacific routes in April.
Christoph Franz, Chairman of the Executive Board & Chief Executive Officer Deutsche Lufthansa AG, said: “This approval marks a great step forward for our customers. Optimised flight schedules will better enable them in future to plan their trips between Japan and Europe. We look forward to this opportunity to consolidate our cooperation with ANA, which signifies a further milestone that will bring the two economic areas closer together. After the tragic earthquake, the go-ahead for our joint venture is a sign that Japan is looking to the future.”
The joint venture with Lufthansa will improve the level of service offered to passengers by allowing ANA and Lufthansa to work together on schedule coordination and joint product sales. Customers will benefit from seamless transfers and better connections. The two carriers aim to introduce the new joint venture within the 2011 winter timetable.
Shinichiro Ito, ANA President and CEO, said: “I’m delighted that we have received official approval to operate the only joint venture on Japan-Europe routes. This agreement will further improve the level of service we offer to passengers and boost our company’s international competitiveness.”

Austrian Airlines A320 seats offer more legroom
Austrian Airlines has completed the conversion of its type A320 aircraft to the new interior furnishings. This means the airline has successfully implemented another key measure designed to improve its product quality.
By September 2011, Austrian Airlines will also refurbish its 11 Boeing 737 aircraft. That means the 32 aircraft of the medium-haul fleet of Austrian Airlines will be operational in the new interior design and fitted with the new, modern leather seats.
[New seat provides more legroom]
The core element of the new cabin is a completely redeveloped seat with a light construction. The new seat offers a range of benefits: its magazine pocket has been moved upwards on the back of the seat, and the coat hook to the outer side. The seat's innovative construction gives passengers - there will be minor differences depending on the aircraft type - up to 10 cm more legroom. The seat is also between 3 and 5 kilos lighter than its predecessor. That will allow Austrian Airlines to save a total of 14,304 kilos of weight every year, reducing consumption of kerosene, providing a real environmental benefit. The new seat also takes up less space. Therefore an average of almost 5 additional seats can be installed in each aircraft. The seat is covered in high-quality leather.
The Austrian Airlines Executive Board, Peter Malanik and Andreas Bierwirth, said the following: "The new cabin is an important step for us: we improve the quality of our product for our passengers, we save fuel, we help the environment and we reduce our unit costs."
The colour of the new design differs clearly from the previous Austrian image. The seats and carpeting are in an elegant grey, set off by accents in a typically Austrian red.

SAA Upgrade Award Charts price increase
SAA UG award CPT/LHR route to Europe increased by 37.5% alone!
For the first time since April 2006, SAA is revising its Voyager Award Chart with a new Award Chart coming into effect on 15 April 2011. Effective from this date, SAA will introduce a modest increase for flight Awards and a more notable increase for Upgrade Awards. Given that the current International Upgrade Award levels are very low, the increase in this regard will be higher. Ultimately, we believe that you will continue to view our Voyager Awards favourably and that our offering will remain competitive compared to other major frequent traveller programmes.
South African Airways acknowledge that flight Awards and Upgrade Awards are the most popular use of your hard earned Miles. Over the years, SAA has kept Award levels revisions to a minimum by closely monitoring the costs of providing such Awards.
Further, SAA has routinely benchmarked its Voyager offering to ensure that we match or at best offer a better product than that of our competitors.
We would like you, our valued Voyager member, to note that you have an opportunity to redeem your desired Award from the current Award Chart prior to 15 April 2011.
Below is an advance look at the SAA Award Chart revisions and on average, the following can be expected in our new SAA Award Chart:
MileageKeeper Awards will increase by 6%
AnyDay Awards for Domestic and Regional flights will increase on average by 14%
AnyDay Awards for International flights will increase between 11% to 28%
Upgrade Awards will increase by approximately 14%, 12% and 35% for Domestic, Regional and International respectively
Accra and Dakar have been added to the region "Travel between Southern Africa and Africa 2"
Furthermore, we are pleased to advise you that we will continue to discount Awards with 3% should you request your SAA Award directly from our website, www.flysaa.com. In addition, we will continue to accept Y, B, M and K Economy Class fares as the qualifying fare classes for Upgrade Awards.

BA Visa Card Eliminate foreign transaction fees
With the holiday travel season right around the corner,Chase Card Services and British Airways announced a new, compelling benefit for international travelers. Starting this month, there will be no foreign transaction fees on international purchases using the British Airways Visa Signature® Card from Chase - a one-of-a-kind offering in the co-branded airline card category. The card proposition is managed by Chase in partnership with The Mileage Company, operators of British Airways BA Miles rewards.
"The British Airways Visa Signature Card was designed to reward individuals who frequently travel internationally," said Andrew Swaffield, managing director of The Mileage Company. "The new proposition, combined with the unprecedented companion redemption voucher program and significant earn-rate for BA Miles, make our program extremely attractive to our target audience.'
"Chase Card Services is continuously looking for new ways to deliver exceptional value to our customers who travel internationally," said Tony Glover, senior vice president, Chase Card Services. "The British Airways Visa Signature Card will ultimately deliver cardmembers three percent savings on every purchase made abroad."
Other key features of the British Airways Visa Signature Card include:
More Ways to Earn BA Miles - The British Airways Visa Signature Card is one of the fastest ways for frequent British Airways passengers to earn miles towards future travel. Cardmembers earn 2.5 BA miles for every $1 spent on British Airways purchases. All other purchases made with the Card, including payments ranging from utility bills to gym memberships, earn 1.25 BA miles for every $1 spent.
Redeem for 1, Travel for 2 - Each and every year a cardmember spends $30,000 they will receive a flight redemption voucher, valid for two years. To use the voucher, cardmembers simply redeem BA Miles for travel. The voucher can then be used to bring a companion along with them, who will fly in the same class of service, requiring no additional miles for travel.
More Ways to Redeem BA Miles - With the British Airways Visa Signature Card, cardmembers have the option to redeem their miles for flight upgrades and future travel on British Airways or any one of its 10 oneworld® alliance partners.

Chase will first unveil chip-and-signature on the JPMorgan Palladium credit card in June, a card serving customers who frequently travel abroad, and later to other Chase credit cards within the year.
"Although chip-enabled terminals are fairly uncommon in the United States where the vast majority of merchants only support magnetic strip cards, our focus is to provide chip-and-signature cards to our cardmembers who frequently travel outside the United States," added Porter.
Chase's cards with chip-and-signature technology will feature both an embedded encrypted chip and traditional magnetic strip to accommodate merchants in the United States. The embedded microchip of chip-and-signature makes the card extremely difficult to copy, because the encrypted chip enables the safer processing and storing of data. Chip technology is the gold standard in Europe and has completely replaced magnetic strips, so cards with chip-and-signature technology offer more streamlined credit card purchases while traveling in Europe.
"Chase Card Services is constantly seeking innovative ways to improve both the transactional and security experience for cardmembers while using their cards during travel," said David Porter, general manager, Chase Card Services. "The addition of chip-and-signature technology enables Chase cardmembers to enjoy simplified transactions in Europe, such as seamlessly using point-of-sale kiosks and train ticket turnstiles the same way the locals can, with the added piece-of-mind of secure transactions."
Chase's cards with chip-and-signature technology can be used everywhere traditional magnetic strip cards are accepted in the U.S. and in more than 130 countries abroad where chip technology is implemented. For more information about Chase credit cards, please visit www.chase.com.

With the new Amazon Shop with Points feature, cardmembers may also combine any amount of points with their Amazon.com Visa card, Amazon.com Gift Cards, or Amazon Payments account balance to pay for their purchases - as many or as few as they want. There is no minimum and no specified amount of points to use.
The Amazon.com Rewards Card from Chase offers an exceptional value on Amazon.com and has no annual fee. Cardmembers can earn points for everyday purchases made with the Card, including:

Chase Priority club Select Visa Card benefits
Priority Club Rewards And Chase Card Services Launch New Travel Card Designed By Frequent Travelers
Chase Card JPMorgan and IHG InterContinental hotel company offer all-new credit card product designed by frequent travelers, the Priority Club Select Visa Card.
The Priority Club Select Visa Card was specifically developed using direct feedback from consumers through a private online community comprised of members of IHG's loyalty program, Priority Club Rewards, who are also Priority Club Rewards Visa cardmembers. Partnering with Communispace as the facilitator, Chase and IHG created an online forum where they could have direct and ongoing conversations with customers in real time, providing continuous feedback and input throughout the entire product development process.
"We're constantly looking for ways to enhance member benefits of our hotel loyalty rewards program," said Lincoln Barrett, vice president, Guest Marketing and Alliances, IHG. "Leveraging conversations through our private online community, ultimately delivered a product that will get our members to their travel rewards even faster than ever before and we know they'll find significant value in that."
As part of the launch of the Priority Club Select Visa, Chase is offering 30,000 bonus points - enough for up to two free nights at many IHG hotels - after the first purchase is made using the card and no annual fee the first year, a $49 value.
Key features of the Priority Club Select Visa Card include:
Annual free night certificate: Each account anniversary, cardmembers automatically receive a free hotel night certificate good at more than 4,400 IHG hotels worldwide including InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza® Hotels & Resorts, Hotel Indigo®, Holiday Inn® Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn Club Vacations®, Holiday Inn Express®, Staybridge Suites® and Candlewood Suites®. The certificate is good at all IHG brands and is valid for 12 months.
Get points back when you use them: Ongoing automatic 10 percent point rebate on all point redemptions exclusively for cardmembers. This allows cardmembers to earn additional points back when they redeem points for hotel Rewards Nights or non-hotel point redemptions, such as gift cards or merchandise.
Gold Elite Status for the life of the card: Access to late check-out at certain properties, Priority Check-In benefits, a 10 percent bonus on base points and an exclusive toll-free customer service number.
Earn more with everyday purchases: Two points are earned for every $1 spent on eligible gas, grocery and dining purchases. Five points are awarded for every $1 spent at any one of IHG's hotel properties, while one point is earned for every $1 spent on all other purchases.
Zero foreign transaction fees: No foreign transaction fees when making international purchases with this card.
Priority Club members of the online community provided insights on benefits and services that would deliver the most value in a travel credit card program, which resulted in a product that now offers such benefits as a best-in-class annual free hotel night certificate and a 10 percent rewards rebate feature. Earning and redeeming rewards is now easier and more flexible than ever.
"Our goal was to create a card that delivers the strongest possible value to Priority Club members," said Tony Glover, senior vice president, Chase Card Services. "Customers are our best resource, so we listened to them. Their candid feedback helped solidify and prioritize features and benefits. The end result is the new Priority Club Select Visa Card - by delivering exceptional value, our intent is for this new card to be first-in-wallet for our customers."

George Bush Airport shuttle bus drop fares
Beginning January 23, 2011 George Bush Airport shuttle bus drops fares by 70 percent and have more options in drop-off or pick-up locations in downtown Houston when traveling to or from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).This dramatic drop in fares – from $15 to $4.50 for a one-way trip – comes after careful cooperation with the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB).
For the Metropolitan Transit Authority the move also aims to increase ridership and reduce costs. The 52-passenger Airport Direct Shuttle currently averages only two riders per trip every 30 minutes between Metro’s passenger plaza at 815 Pierce in downtown Houston and Terminal C at IAH.
“It hemorrhages money,” confessed George Greanias, president and CEO of Metro, about the current shuttle service. “We think it’s a valuable service, (but) we need to reconfigure it in a way that’s more cost-effective.”
The new route will avoid the passenger plaza completely, transporting travelers instead to and from the George R. Brown Convention Center, as well as downtown hotels: the Hilton Americas, the Doubletree, the Hyatt Regency, the Marriott, the Four Seasons, and the Crowne Plaza, all in downtown Houston.
In fact, the passenger plaza will be completely shut down by Metro to further reduce costs. As a result of these changes, and despite the fares being dropped, Metro authorities project a savings of $350,000 overall during the first eight months of the rerouting.

IAH rated best for on-time Performance
No other large airport in the United States consistently operated more timely flights than Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, according to the United States Department of Transportation, which each month compiles statistics for on-time performance at the nation’s airports.
During the month of October 2010 no other airport in the U.S. arrived and departed flights more on-time than IAH.
Of the nation’s 30 largest airports, Bush Intercontinental averaged on-time departures for 91.44 percent and on-time arrivals for 91.42 percent of their flights, in comparison to a national average departure on-time performance of 83.8 percent, respectively.
“At Bush Intercontiental, the majority of our travelers are connecting from one flight to another. We work diligently with our airline partners to ensure that from the airport's perspective all is ready to support outstanding on-time capabilities," says Mary Case, airport general manager for Bush Intercontinental. “This recognition from the U.S. Department of Transportation is really a testament to the hundreds of airport employees who make it their personal mission to operate at a high performance and to be at our best to serve the traveling public.”
In addition, the nation’s airlines have also significantly reduced the amount of time flights are delayed. Since the federal government enacted new regulations restricting the amount of time occupied aircraft can sit on the tarmac without letting their passengers off, there have been significantly less such incidences.
Between May and October 2010 the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported only 12 tarmac delays of more than three hours by the 18 airlines that file such statistics – in comparison to 546 such delays during the same time period a year earlier.
In October 2010 alone, there were no flights reported with tarmac delays of more than three hours, down from a reported 11 flights in October 2009.
